Black Pepper

Black pepper, scientifically known as Piper nigrum, is a flowering vine cultivated for its fruit, which is dried and used as a spice and seasoning. Native to the Malabar Coast of India, black pepper is often referred to as the “King of Spices” due to its global popularity and historical significance in trade. The spice is made by harvesting the unripe green berries, which are then cooked briefly in hot water and dried, causing them to shrink and darken into the familiar black wrinkled peppercorns. Known for its sharp, pungent flavor and aroma, black pepper is used to enhance the taste of both savory and sweet dishes. It also contains piperine, a compound believed to aid digestion and improve nutrient absorption.
